Question by starlightrap: Anyone have gift suggestions for son going elk hunting for the first time?
My son hunts with both rifle and bow. He hunts deer but has been given a Christmas "hunt for elk". Is there any equipment he would be grateful to have for this hunt? He wants to try and get the elk with his bow and mentioned arrows but I know nothing about them. I can't afford an expensive rifle but maybe I could find a used one. Any help from experienced hunters would be appreciated.

If you want to go for a memorable gift, get him a buck knife with his initials engraved. I still have mine my grand father gave me and it has come in handy a lot when hunting.

@65DegN Amen! Yes This particular day I didn’t carry a quiver and I was very careful…but yes it’s not a good practice.

@mickyhaney Howdy Mick, I don’t know exactly what angle you are coming from here, but I am a native Montanan born and raised here and I currently live in Montana. I agree though that hunting has gone way to commercial.

@bowtieguy2001 Agreed! Sounds like you have some experience under your belt.

@joetang15 Hey Joe, If you look closely, I am using a stick I found lying on the ground to do the raking…not my bow!

Way to go B and L…you two were right in the zone!
That is some awesome footage and a great encounter.
You had that Bull hunted right up…like you said…most other hunting equipment and he would be in the roasting pan right now.
Excellent lil show and thumbs up posting!

He’s not just hacking brush at 1:18. You can make yourself sound like another bull rubbing his antlers on a tree and if theres another bull around looking for a fight alot of times they’ll come looking for whats in his teritory

Im not trying to be rude, but why are you using your bow to hack out brush at about 1:18 in the video???? Won’t that hurt the bow?
June 6th, 2010 - 02:47
ya you get that tree

I’m an avid Back country elk bow hunter from Montana. I live here, work here and hunt here. We deal with the low income jobs, harder life style, and shitty weather. Then when we try to enjoy the best of montana, we can’t because the out of staters got more money, they come in buy the lease, pay the outfitters and kick us off. I hunt to feed my family and only kill what I can eat. I read about people shooting 4 elk a year in 4 states. Wasteful and disrespectful. Hunt your own damn state

Careful with that broadhead.
Cool video.

Thanks backwoodshunter! Stay alert, keep your string waxed and your feathers dry.

Hi Mrhillzey, Actually you have been misinformed by Air17. The Roosevelt Elk is the largest in body size and weight of the 4 subspecies of the Elk family. Maybe Air17 meant that the Roosevelt generally carries a smaller set of antlers, which is true. Rocky Mountain Elk most of the time sport the largest antlers by far and are sought after as trophies. To anwser your question about bow-weight, shot placement is everything but I wouldn’t want to hunt elk with less than a 60 lb draw weight.

GREAT VIDEO 5*s

A wise hunter.

I don’t know about draw weight but a roosevelt elk is smaller and the antlers are a bit more curved. Roosevelt elk are also more on the coast. They are found in California along with Tule Elk.
June 6th, 2010 - 07:02
what is the difference between a roosevelt elk and a rocky mountain elk? also what draw weight would you use on elk?

A forced shot is never good. My awesome respect for the animal prevents me from flinging arrows! If you’re not 100 % sure of the shot NEVER take it. Take it from someone who has been hunting elk for 30 years and guided 100’s of hunters over the last 20 + years.

Thanks for the comment! The bugling is learned from countless hours listening to bulls bugle over the last 30 years. I’m not even the best at it. Many people have learned to master the sound of the bugling wapiti.
June 6th, 2010 - 08:08
Awesome video. Where did you learn to bugle?
June 6th, 2010 - 08:54
you should’ve taken the shot. Think you can hit it?
