No gun is good for self/home defense unless you know how to use it when the time comes.

I don't believe a 22lr is a good choice. You will probably be scared and unable to place a shot in the right place to instantly kill the attacker.

The best weapon for the average homeowner would be a pump action shotgun. The distinctive sound of the gun cambering a round will strike fear into most intruders.
