I would go with a .30-06.

Mountain Man, that sounds much more like brown bear behavior, and I don't doubt he was telling the truth. Shooting a bear head on is not easy, they have an incredibly thick skull, so your best window is right under their chin, with a chest shot. That's why I hunt browns with a .375 H&H mag.

  1. I would use a 308. because my grandfather uses it for elk hunting and it puts a hole the size of a donut in the elk. Really reliable caliber

  2. I would agree with the 30-06, or 7mm mag.

  3. 30-06 Springfield….. As much as some regular folks may note I like .308 a lot — I still prefer a heavier bullet for bear…..

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.30-06_Springfield

  4. Some guns are
    .30-06
    .270
    .7mm
    .300 mag
    and maybe a .308

  5. I have taken both with 30-06, but also took several brown bears over the years with a 8mm K-98 Nazi bolt action my dad brought home from WW2.

  6. Best all around, anything on the continent round is the 30-06

  7. Well, you guys are gonna bounce up and down in your chairs and call me names when I answer this …But,years ago I was out hunting and ran into a game department official and we were talking about bears, and he said , he got between a sow and her cubs once and she charged him from about 70yrds away.He told me he fired 6 times, striking her in the head every time with an .06. He then said she dropped about 3ft from him when she died.and when he examined her that all 6 rounds had struck home but 5 of them had bounced off her head the last broke through her scull. I know, i know thats a fluke, but I like something with a little more poop! AK pilot:I like the 375, its flat shooting and packs a womp !

  8. Magnums are not needed or necessary to Harvest Elk or Bear.* The tried, true, tested, and proven since 1906 to be the Best Big Game Rifle for All North American Game is the 30-06.* You have a greater variety of ullet weights and Loads to choose from with the 30-06.*~~

  9. I’m fortunate enough to have hunting rifles in quite a few calibers. The perfect caliber for the shot is generally the one I was going to take with me before I decided to pick up the one I have with me.
All of them are a compromise. For hunting that size game in close cover, one of my favorites is 348 Winchester, but there seems to be a correlation between my carrying that rifle and the opportunity for a shot too long to take with that rifle. If I’m carrying one of my small-bores, I get the perfect shot for a medium-bore. Murphy’s Law. The best compromise for you might be 280 Remington, or it might be 325 WSM. Personal preferences and the areas you hunt will have a lot to say about your choice.

  10. One gun, go as big as you can handle. 338 or 300 win mag. both will stop any North American game.

  11. I haved hunted both of these animals with a 270. win for the last 20 years. Last year i bought a 300. wsm and now i would use it on moose and black bear and elk if i ever hunting them again. I love them but i perfer moose
