One gun, go as big as you can handle. 338 or 300 win mag. both will stop any North American game.

I'm fortunate enough to have hunting rifles in quite a few calibers. The perfect caliber for the shot is generally the one I was going to take with me before I decided to pick up the one I have with me.
All of them are a compromise. For hunting that size game in close cover, one of my favorites is 348 Winchester, but there seems to be a correlation between my carrying that rifle and the opportunity for a shot too long to take with that rifle. If I'm carrying one of my small-bores, I get the perfect shot for a medium-bore. Murphy's Law. The best compromise for you might be 280 Remington, or it might be 325 WSM. Personal preferences and the areas you hunt will have a lot to say about your choice.

Well, you guys are gonna bounce up and down in your chairs and call me names when I answer this ...But,years ago I was out hunting and ran into a game department official and we were talking about bears, and he said , he got between a sow and her cubs once and she charged him from about 70yrds away.He told me he fired 6 times, striking her in the head every time with an .06. He then said she dropped about 3ft from him when she died.and when he examined her that all 6 rounds had struck home but 5 of them had bounced off her head the last broke through her scull. I know, i know thats a fluke, but I like something with a little more poop! AK pilot:I like the 375, its flat shooting and packs a womp !

30-06 Springfield..... As much as some regular folks may note I like .308 a lot -- I still prefer a heavier bullet for bear.....
